Recycled Skateboard Tiles are now featured in two locations at PHL International Airport
/SkateOrDesign’s Skateboard Tiles now greet visitors at two different terminals in the Philadelphia International Airport thanks to PHL’s exuberant Art at the Airport Program. Deckstool furniture was first featured through the program in 2007 and the success of that exhibition led to discussions of a more permanent installation. “As I was developing the wall tiles, I dreamed of potential locations to showcase them.” mused designer, Jason Podlaski “An airport always seemed like an ideal location. Being able to work locally, with a visionary and highly competent team made the projects easy, even though the products were still somewhat experimental.”
The first of the two installations is located in the International Terminal ‘A’ and consists of a number of "Tetris-esque” panels made up of 12”x12” Woven Skateboard Tiles. The panels are mounted to the wall above a reclaimed wood seating area designed and built by the Art at the Airport team.
“The ArtPort Lounge” is a seating and amenity rich area in Terminal ‘F’. The walls of the lounge are completely covered with colorful work by local artists and designers. Our second installation, two ameba-shaped splotches of 7” Peel and Stick Skateboard Tile have been clinging to the back wall since the lounge opened several years ago.
More about Art at the Airport
The Airport’s Exhibitions Program is a nationally-recognized, award-winning visual arts initiative.
In 1998, Philadelphia International Airport established an Exhibitions Program - a visual arts initiative to humanize the Airport environment, provide visibility for Philadelphia's unique cultural life, and to enrich the experience of the traveling public.
The Exhibitions Program is responsible for organizing and presenting rotating exhibitions that are located throughout the Airport. The exhibits change throughout the year to provide a variety of educational and cultural programs. This forum for presenting visual arts attests to the Airport's commitment to supporting arts and culture.
The Exhibitions Program provides millions of visitors from around the world access to a wide variety of art forms by artists and arts institutions from the Philadelphia area.
